MONTHLY REFLECTION

As part of our commitment to the pastoral care and spiritual growth of our community, we have added this page.  We welcome your reflections on Scripture, Sacraments, Liturgical Seasons and more.  Please send an email if you wish to contribute.

What are they saying about us?

“For we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all God's people.” (Colossians 1:4)

“...the news about your faith in God has gone everywhere."  (I Thessalonians 1:8)

Recently, I was watching the reports from Madrid about World Youth Day being held there in mid-August.  It took me back to my one experience at World Youth Day 1993 in Denver, Colorado.  I was a youth minister at a parish in Boise, Idaho at the time and part of the festivities was to trade trinkets from our home towns, states or countries.  Our group carried around little "Idaho Potato Pins" to share with others.  Most foreigners recognized our pins and I would learn how to say "potato" in their languages.  It amazed me how many people - from the U.S. and abroad - knew only one thing about Idaho.  There are many other things people could know about my home state and not all of it flattering but I know at least they've heard about our "famous potatoes."

What do others say about us?  What is our reputation?  What do they say, if anything, about Imago Dei?  Are we a welcoming, loving community to everyone that comes to us?  Do we open our arms and hearts to the diverse people that attend our activities?

As we move into September, Las Vegas is getting ready to celebrate Pride.  What do others say about the LGBT Community?  When outsiders see the Pride Parade or Festival - either in person or in the media - what messages are they getting from us?  Will our example be a positive or negative one to those "outside" of our community?

Most of the time we will never hear how others are affected by coming into contact with us.  St. Francis of Assisi said, "Preach the Gospel at all times, when necessary, use words."  Our actions will speak louder than any words we will speak.

Prayer:  Lord, help me to share your love with everyone I encounter.

Call to Action:  Remind yourself that you are sign of your faith and of your community.  Most of the time you are not "preaching to the choir" and others will form opinions about you and those in your various "comminities" from you.  Pray they are good ones.
